DESCRIPTION:Skijoring combines cross country skiing with dog power. The skier is attached to his/her dog with a belt and towline. The dog then runs ahead as the skier skis. Skijoring is a team sport which allows both human and canine counterparts to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors.Skijoring is derived from the Norwegian word skikjøring meaning ski driving. The sport has been around for hundreds of years and originally started using reindeer and wooden skis. The sport also uses horses\, but dogs are now the most common animal used in skijoring.Most medium size dogs (30 pounds and up) who are trained properly can be candidates for skijoring.

If you are looking for a competitive experience for youth\, consider participating in the Junior Birkie race which will be held on the same courses following the Barnebirkie.

DESCRIPTION:6 Years Old to High Schoolers! The Junior Birkie Team Sprint Relays will start and finish in downtown Hayward on the American Birkebeiner Finish Line. Teams are composed of 2 or 3 members (depending on age group) of the same gender and age group. Teams may represent a club or school team\, but no affiliation with each other is necessary.  If you would like to participate in the team relay but are without a team\, indicate that in your registration and we will do our best to match you up with another racer needing a teammate. Unofficial teams of mixed gender and/or ages will be allowed to race\, but will not be eligible for awards. New in 2020 – a Team Costume Contest!

DESCRIPTION:Grab friends and family and give the fifth annual Birkie “Giant Ski” race a try! Each team of six people races head to head against another team and the clock for 50 yards on a pair of 25-foot long “Giant Skis” up Hayward’s Main Street*. The event is huge fun for both participants and spectators.
